The Airmen's Stories - Sgt. R M Steele

 

Rodney Murrey Steele was born on 2nd September 1919 in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire and joined the RAFVR about July 1939 as an Airman u/t WOp/AG. Called up on 1st September 1939, he completed his training and joined 235 Squadron at Bircham Newton on 4th September 1940.

Steele was posted with his flight to RAF Aldergrove on 19th November 1940 where it combined with a flight of 236 Squadron to reform 272 Squadron on the 21st. He flew his first sortie with the new squadron on the 24th.

Commissioned in December 1942, his subsequent service is currently undocumented until he was released from the RAF in 1946 as a Flight Lieutenant.

He died in May 2003 in Ludlow.
