The Airmen's Stories - P/O E L Smith

 

Eric Leigh Smith was born on 8th June 1908 in Ilford and was employed as an estate agent when he joined the RAFVR in June 1939 as an Airman u/t WOp/AG.

Called up on 1st September 1939, he completed his training, was commissioned on 4th February 1940 and posted to 601 Squadron at Tangmere.

He joined 604 Squadron from 601 Squadron on 18th February 1940.

Smith was detached to CGS Warmwell from 15th July to 10th August for a Gunnery Leader course and detached to RAF Catterick from 4th to 11th December.

He had married Daisy Florence Archer in Ilford, Essex in July 1941.

His subsequent service is currently undocumented until he was released from the RAF in 1945 as a Flight Lieutenant.

Smith died on 5th November 1978 in Norwich.
