On the night of 18th/19th June 1940 Heinkel 111s from KG4 'General Wever' were tasked to attack industrial targets in Eastern England. The unit was based at Merville and Lille-Roubaix.

Aircraft 5J+GA of Stab/KG4 had bombed the oil tanks at Canvey when it was shot down by F/Lt. AG Malan from 74 Squadron. It came down alongside Springfield Road , Chelmsford. Oblt. H-G Corpus, Oberfw. W Gross and Fw. W Vick were killed, Lt. E Simon baled out to be taken PoW.
