Paul Nash - East Anglian Heinkel

Watercolour, 1940

Image courtesy Art Gallery of Western Australia

The painting depicts a coastal location but I have only been able to find a photograph of He111 1H+EN of KG26 that came down near Rhodes Farm, North Berwick, Scotland on 9th February 1940 after being damaged by S/Ldr. Douglas Farquhar of 602 Squadron.

Uffz. F Weiners died later of his injuries at RAF Drem, Uffz. H Meyer, Uffz. J Sangl and Ogfr. H Hegemann were all taken prisoner.

Being only slightly damaged the Heinkel was repaired and tested at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough. Of course all Heinkels that managed a wheels-down landing and tipped up on an obstacle would look the same, we don't know if Nash made sketches at the location or worked from photographs.
